You know, it's kinda funny. This year I guess I stuck to some resolutions I don't remember making-- like, oh, finally getting out of my stepdad's house--

[ funny how getting kicked out makes that easy to do. ]

--and quitting smoking-- [ thanks a ton Eponine. ]

--and getting real close with my dad. [ no. really, Eponine. thanks. ]

Huh. Yeah. Wonder what this year's gonna have in store. Can't wait. [ With an eyeroll and a familiar, irritating itch for a smoke. ]

So. How many of you are going to make optimistic promises you're not gonna keep, eh? I know I'm tapped out of 'em, but that's just me.

[ A few (or 20) minutes later Grantaire knocks on the Demeter cabin door. Being both impatient and cold, he cracks it an inch or so after a moment. ]

[Jehan's on his bunk, writing. He looks up when R calls]

Grantaire! Come in, come in!

[ Grinning and nodding to him as he walks in. ] So. I was promised gum for my trek.

[ Leaning against the door to shut it behind him, hands in pockets as he starts looking around. ]

[ He reaches for it and... smacks his leg into a dresser in the process. But he has the gum okay. ]

...Are you a bad throw or is my depth perception that bad? [ He wheezes in pain, rubbing his shin. ]

Probably both, to be quite honest. Want some aspirin?

No, 'm okay, thanks. I'll try the gum though.

[ Unwrapping it and frowning. He sniffs it again and looks skeptically at Jehan. ]

You're sure this isn't just grape in a different package?

Why on earth would I buy a product that would lie to me like that? Trust me, it's not grape!

Hey, people buy lies all the time, that's what photoshop's for.

[ He pops it into his mouth regardless, chewing it. ]

Marianne got it in Vienna. I'll have her send me the rest and I'll give it to you when it arrives.

She wants to get rid of it! Better it goes to someone who can stand it.

I'd give you anything if you liked it, Grantaire, regardless of if I didn't like it.

Dunno why but thanks... You're too good of a friend to me sometimes.

That's exactly why! We're friends, silly. I like to make my friends happy--and don't you dare pull an Eponine on me and say you don't deserve it or whatever.

I don't deserve it, but I will accept it.

[ Smiling. ] Not quite as stubborn as that girl is.

Gods, I do like Eponine but sometimes I want to shake her so a little self-respect gets into her head. You, at least, have a little.
