[So if you happen to be outside in any given number of locations today, and just so happen to feel like having the hem of your shirt or some loose-hanging article of clothing on your person set on fire... Ankh is currently tossing little balls of fire at passers-by from a high-up tree branch in sheer antagonistic boredom.]

[Nothing to hurt anyone, naturally, just enough to startle and singe your favorite tee shirt. He does this in varying locations across camp, never staying in one place for particularly long to avoid getting caught. Sorry not sorry.]

Are those free for the taking? [Not relevant to the question Eiji just asked you, Ankh.]

[That's not a location at all, Ankh.]

[Back on point;] I'll meet you outside Cabin One. Since you'll be going there eventually anyway.

[WELL HE GUESSES HE'LL JUST BRING SOME STRAWBERRIES.]

[And so Ankh is perched atop Cabin One, waiting.]

[More like he doesn't want to put up with your complaining.]

[But here he is. With a basket of strawberries. He looks up and waves.]

Yo!

[Damn straight with a basket of strawberries. Ankh perks, looks him over, zeroes in on the basket, and hops down from the roof without a second thought. He doesn't even make much sound when he hits the ground, straightening and plucking a strawberry from the basket before he even bothers greeting Eiji. When he does, it's a slight nod of his head and a vague affirmative grunt.]

[Well. That was something. He makes like he's going to offer him the basket and then he pulls it away at the last second.]

So, what was so important that you had to call me out individually?

[That's fine, he'll just savor this one for a moment.]

You were present for the discussion about the Red Room. I have some questions.

[He folds his arms over the basket and tilts his head a bit.]

Mm. Okay. I don't know a lot more than you, though. We came to camp at roughly the same time.

Judging from the way Annabeth pondered on it, I'm assuming Egyptian magic has yet to be tested on these Red Room people. I'm consulting Artemis on this as well, but what do you know of specific differences between, say, myself and you? In regard of magic or powers.

[This is... probably the first time Eiji's really seen Ankh seriously consider something that wasn't just for shits and giggles.]

[It sure is. It catches him off guard for a moment before he blinks and then considers the question.]

I don't know very much about the different Pantheon's, but I would think that there would be a considerable difference. How does Egyptian magic work, exactly?

We train from a young age. It's effectively learning by usage.

[He chews thoughtfully on a strawberry.]

Where does the magic come from? Is it gifted from the gods? Or does it come from some other source?

[He looks at Eiji for a moment, blankly, and then shifts his weight, holding the basket back out to him. He pulls a sheaf of papyrus and a pen from a pocket, splaying his palm and using it as a writing surface.]

Hieroglyphs. You essentially write out the incantation-- most of us can speak them, as well. [He demonstrates, picking up another strawberry. He writes out sa-kebeb, not that Eiji can probably read it, which proceeds to freeze the strawberry.]

[He hasn't seen a lot of instances of Egyptian magic. At least not like this. His eyes widen and he ducks to get a better look of the strawberry.]

Can anyone be a magician?

[Here, Eiji, if you're so interested in it then why don't you eat it. 'Cause Ankh is shoving it in your face, scoffing.]

Don't be stupid. Why would Egyptians be magicians if anybody could be one?

[The response is muffled and indignant. He just grudgingly chews and swallows the strawberry and scowls at him.]

I was asking because you really didn't answer my other question. It's not like I can answer how similar we might be unless I actually know how the Egyptians work.

[You won't get the basket back then, rude bird.]

But I guess the truth is, what we know about ourselves is pretty minimal. We know that we're ...reincarnations, I guess. That our power comes from whatever God or Goddess we represent. I didn't have to study or practice- I simply came by my abilities.

[He shifts his weight again, folding his paper and tucking it and his pen away again, rocking from the balls of his feet to his heels a time or two. He runs his tongue over his teeth in thought, mouth closed, and tilts his head.]

[A huffed sort of sigh.]

I'm not sure if that makes me more or less inclined to question what the hell she wants with Egyptians, then.

[And Eiji is giving this serious thought.]

The Red Room is a serious threat. It might be that they don't have Egyptians on their side. All of the known members looked to be demigods- so maybe she things Egyptian magic, being as it's so different, would be an advantage?

Seems like a lot of trust to put in someone that can't just call upon the power of a God. [He shifts his weight again.]

...But it would have its advantages, especially if the opposition isn't familiar with Egyptian magic. I wouldn't say it's superior to any other form of magic, but a magician that knows what they're doing... [He flexes the fingers of his right hand, his left curled around his wrist.]

If you're referring to us, I wouldn't go so far to call us Gods just yet. I mean... I think if the two of is were to fight, I don't think I would win. My power lies entirely in that I have a magical belt and that I have a strange subconscious knowledge of how to defend myself. That's all.

[He smiles a bit.]

Besides, given the weight of the situation, we should look to all our resources.

[He preens a little at that.] I suppose practice and expertise is a bit more impressive than just adopted powers.

[He shakes his head.] But that's beside the point. Do you know of Annabeth Chase?
